Greetings from Adam Forest
Dear Members of Theatre Puget Sound:
Greetings from Fractured Atlas, one of the largest arts service organizations in the country. We are very
proud to announce our partnership with Theatre Puget Sound and to be bringing our multitude of services to
its members in Washington State.
It is no secret that these are troubling times for those in our profession. The support structures for
independent and emerging artists are dwindling and the funding cuts that have plagued our profession for
years show no sign of going away.
One of the most vital issues facing theatre artists today is that of affordable healthcare. The rising costs of
insurance are affecting everyone in America, but few more than independent artists. Their all-too infrequent
and short-term jobs leave them cut-off from the employer sponsored plans most Americans enjoy.
Over 50 percent of working artists are forced to pay for their own health insurance, compared to only 8
percent of working Americans.
For several years now, Fractured Atlas has been addressing this problem head on by engineering
innovative and unique solutions. We understand the tremendous financial strain most artists are under and
how difficult it is to find an affordable plan for which they qualify.
We have taken a "strength in numbers" tactic towards this problem. Our belief is that by using our
collective bargaining power (and there are quite a few of us) we can talk to the insurance companies in a
language they understand: numbers. By joining together under one banner we can create a collective
that the insurance companies cannot possibly ignore.
It is this philosophy of "strength in numbers" that has motivated us to offer free Associate Memberships in
Fractured Atlas to all Theatre Puget Sound members. By becoming an Associate Member, you will be
eligible to enroll in any of several low-cost healthcare plans that Fractured Atlas has made available to the
arts community.
Are the plans that are available to our members as robust and comprehensive as those offered by a
Fortune 500 company to its employees? Absolutely not, and we make no secret about it. But they are
affordable on an artist's income. They do provide a wide range of benefits that can offer significant
protection from overwhelming healthcare costs. And they do not require any sort of medical screening
process to qualify.
Finally, the "strength in numbers" concept doesn't just apply to health insurance. As an Associate Member,
you'll have access to a host of networking and career development tools through our website at
www.fracturedatlas.org, including our Calendar of Events, PR Newswire, Job Center, Support Forum, and
more.
On the pages that follow you can learn a little more about Fractured Atlas and the benefits available to
you as an Associate Member. Please look through the information carefully and when you are ready to join
