Ok, so even though as a whole, the karma system really amounts to nothing in the grand scheme of things, some folks are irked when their "rating" takes a hit.  Given the current parameters, someone can applaud or smite you up to every hour (or so it appears).  If we had 500 members on the board, it might have more use, but as it is, we've got probably a handful of folks that actually use the "feature".  The fact that some folks do get offended, troubled, or in any way don't jive with things seems reason enough for concern.  I like to take the approach that it just doesn't mean anything, and that's fine, but when we (I assume) are trying to grow the messageboards, one of the last things we need is anything that will keep folks away.

Assuming that this is as simple as flicking off a switch, it seems more valuable to simply do away with the system.  We've already got the posting levels that, in the words of a friend of mine, appeases the "gold star mentality" that, as sensitive human beings, most all of us are afflicted by.  Smiley

Figured I'd post a poll so it's (hopefully) not just me bellyaching.  Also, if I'm making too big a deal out of anything, that'd be nifty to know as well.  Personally, I don't mind it.

Cheers.

edit:  realized the tone of this post might imply that I have anything to do with this system.  I'm just an obsessive goober in the wings.  It was meant, instead, to pass on the general feel about the karma system "feature" from the messageboarders to the powers that be.

I agree that way it is now, people stand to get hurt feelings.  Something that I've seen work on other boards was the ability to applaud a post rather than a person, and there was no smite button.  So it becomes less of a popularity contest or fun game of smite-the-random-person, and more a form of applause when someone posts something you agree with.

Just my two cents, although personally, I don't really notice the smiting and applauding until someone posts something about it.

I like Maureen's idea - and thanks for bringing it up, Chad. I agree, the whole karma thing is not really a big deal in the great scheme of things, but sometimes I like to give a "hear hear" of agreement - and it's fun to just click a button to do that instead of writing a whole posting like this one...

I haven't really seen anyone get offended. I think everyone was joking around.
It's just kind of a fun thing. I don't think it means much. Though I agree with Maria that it's nice to applaud sometimes instead of replying.
I rarely smite to smite.
Unless I get smitten.

Somehow, I don't think too many people are surprised.

This is cracking me up.  What happens with a smite or an applaud?  I'm going to do it to myself - both ways to test it and see if I mind.

Nothing happened.  I sure wish a smiting would draw a mustache on my photo.  What happens and why can't I see it?  I yearn for it and yet it does not happen for me.

I have reversed your Teri smite, because she really doesn't deserve it. I only applaud! applause for all!

Teri-a smite lowers your karma rating by 1.  An applaud raises it.  So I lowered your karma from 4 to 3, then Ken and Rik raised it from 3 to 5.  Much fun was had by all!  Watch out for Chenovick, though, he's a smiter.  (Get it?  Biter, smiter!)  Tee hee!
