I'm pleased to say that the University of Washington is considering offering a certificate program in Stage Management.

We expect this program to offer training to aspiring Stage Managers, as well as aspiring future Company Managers, Production Managers, and Managing Directors.  See tentative curriculum below:

Format:
•   Non-credit certificate with 3 required courses
•   One course each quarter, 30 hours of instruction per course (3 hours per evening, once a week, 10 weeks per quarter)

Fall:
Introduction to Stage Management
•   Creative and administrative work of a stage manager
•   Forms and formats
•   Protocols
•   Roles of a stage manager in production

Winter:
Intermediate Stage Management
•   Introduction to theatre technology, design, and directing, in the context of the role of the stage manager
•   Company management
•   Production management
•   Theatre management
•   Accessibility and disability in the theatre
•   Guest artists from the local arts community

Spring:
Advanced Stage Management
•   Advanced stage management problem-solving techniques
•   Group organizational dynamics
•   Stage and production management in a new building
•   Stage management on tour
•   Optional stage management practicum
•   Guest speakers/performers from the local arts community
•   Capstone student portfolio review

If this program would be important to your goals in the next few years, or if you know other individuals to whom you might recommend a program in Stage Management, please send me a note today at rray@extn.washington.edu.  Please include any feedback or comments you may have about the curriculum, schedule, or related concerns.  In these challenging times, it’s crucial to muster support for existing, as well as new, initiatives in the Arts -- and your voice is important.

Thanks very much,
