Found in recent audition announcement her on TPS: Old Guy (age range 38-45) – The husband. Profanity required. Guess that makes me "older than dirt". Now mind you, I like not being in competition with actors in their 20's for roles. But 38 - 45 OLD? ? Hardly!

It reminds me of the casting calls I see for film schools where none of the characters is older than, say, 24.

What I hate worse is women's monologue books that are all 20-30's.

Does that mean every other word is **&^%$ and there's no storyline or dialogue?

Yeah, I thought that too when I saw it!!! And then immediately thought the person putting on the film must be only 18, for 38 to qualify as "Old guy".
I also love the name. Old Balls. Now that's really hitting below the belt. (ha ha, okay, sorry about that one).

It sounds like a very amatuerish/unprofessional production to me, if they say and old guy is 38-45.

I think half the student film auditions I see call for "older men," (by which they mean someone in their 30s), and "attractive women" (by which they mean someone younger than 25), and an amazing number of them require "some female nudity." I guess I have to write my own plays featuring attractive people over 35. Yes, Virginia, there ARE attractive people over 35!

Or write some films for unattractive people under 25. Or over 25. Why is it that the men characters can have a variety of looks, but all the women have to be attractive and "fit" and "sexy"

I read these posts and I have to respond to them!
The auditions that you are talking about ARE for Student Films. Any student film requiring "some female nudity" say "NO" and then report them to the school. This happen 7 years ago and it stopped. The reason why this exists is because the several actresses that do. If every actress decided not to then it would not exist. Some blame Marilyn Monroe(?) Anyway, just say "no"!
There are several writers be it male and female that do write for those over 35. However there is no rule that you have to check out a monologue book to get some great writing. Check out "The Hours" for example.
Look at screenplays and/or novels. Believe me there is something out there!
In regards to ageism, I had several actors who were the age required for characters in a play that was being performed in a small theatre a few years ago. Well the director who was in his his 20's, decided to cast younger actors and the result was very poor. The audience members walked out due to it not being believable enough.
In regards to my past productions, I usually had actors and actresses from say 19 to 65(?). However, I do NONEQUITY and proud of it.
Best to you all and take care-
Tanja

I just wrote a show and am trying to cast it right now that has mainly roles for those actors 30-70 years old and I've having to beat the bushes to get actors in those age ranges to audition. And it pays! Go figure. If you want to audition and can't make it contact me and I'll arrange something, but I really want a good show. Take a look at the audition notice on TPS "A Christmas Circus" or contact me at sarah@stillion.com and I'll send you the notice details again.

I fall in that age range, but it's a heck of a long drive for me.

Ditto. Although it does sound like something I'd be interested in otherwise.
