Does the timer start when we walk on stage?  End our slate?  Or what.

Louise - the timer begins when you begin your pieces AFTER your slate. If there is significant non-verbal acting that is clearly a part of your piece - the timer will begin at that point. But generally - the timing begins when you open your mouth to begin your piece.
