Should you audition for a play or a part you don't think you're right for?

Lynn,
I think that all depends on the reasons why you don't think you're right for it .

If it's an age or a cultural thing, usually, I'll email the director and ask them what they think. Directors are often very responsive as they don't want their time wasted either !

If it's because you think it's out of your range as an actor , you should still do it because you can learn a lot by stretching and sometimes you can change director's minds about the direction they were going for with a character.

My 02 cents.

Auditioning is a skill in and of itself.  It's good to keep in practice.

And I agree with Dorothy -- a director may have one thing in mind and then see you.

And if you decide not to audition, it's a good idea and professional to email or call the director or producer ahead so that an alternate actor can take that audition slot and so that the auditors don't write you off as a no-show. I missed an audition at Taproot earlier this year, because despite the fact that I had written it in my planner, I was so busy that week with auditions, I totally forgot I had that particular one to go to until a few days later. As soon as I realized my memory loss, I contacted Taproot and apologized profusely to the casting director.  Wink

To add to all the other things that have been said, I usually go for things that I may not be particularly right for just so that they can see me. And possibly think of me for later things. Ive gotton a few shows that way. They happened to remember me, and called me for later shows. It was pretty super
