You may be having a problem with the chat room if you are behind a firewall or your security settings are set too high. Generally, when I sign in I get the following pop-up window:
I click 'yes' and the chat room starts. You can also click 'always' and never see it again.

If it won't load (and you're still interested in using it), please drop a note about what sort of error (or whatever) you get when you try to use it.

Okay, I'm game. I'm not much on chat rooms but I decided to fire it up and...
Tiny Box!
I'm running it on a Mac on Safari in OSX. (The latest version of everything.)
It was impossible to make out a lot of the info because it was bound in the center of the screen by a tiny box.
I tried hitting the float button to see if that would free it but nothing happened.

Okay.. .. I fired up the chat room, but only 'cause there was a link in Karen's post. How would one arrive there from the TPS site without that link?

Justin - the little horizontal buttons across the top of each message board page that starts with 'home'... the second to the last one just before the 'logout' button is the 'chat' button.
It can also be found at the bottom of the page just before the list of 'who is on-line'.

Okay - I decided to pop in and say "hi" (see Machelle, I tried!). I got a blue screen with a little box at the bottom that said "float". When I clicked on it, nothing happened.

Danielle, what sort of system are you posting from? Posting from work?
The "float" button will only work after you've got the chat window active.

With such a small volume of people willing and/or able to use the chat room, the best thing might be to schedule an actual date and time for chatting, so people know ahead of time when others will be available.

thanks, Chris -
I must confess, I sort of like the waiting and checking the boards to see what new replies have come in lately... not only does it give me a little something to look forward to on a work break, but it has an old connotation of early flirting almost - that kind of 7th grade flirting where each day all you can do is wonder if that boy you like will maybe look at you in the hall, or maybe say "hey" as he walks by, or even throw a pizza burger in your hair at lunch...
chatting provides instant gratification, yes, but it takes some of the anticipation away, you know?
Very sua-vey pic, by the way, Mr. Comte!

Actually, I have set a time for this Thursday at 4pm. I did set a topic of discussing Bumbershoot Application guidelines etc but I'm certainly willing to talk about anything (well almost) when anyone who shows up!

Maria,
Well, we were both in the chat room at the same time yesterday, but you didn't answer my "hello's"...
I haven't done much in the way of "chatting" for about four or five years now -- used to spend a lot of time on IRC, but the novelty quickly wears off once you realize that in fact 85% of the people using chat rooms actually ARE in Jr. high school!
And yes, I do know how to clean up on occasion!

Did this problem from Richard Lorig ever get answered? I had the same problem and I'm running with the same system and browser.

Becky-
Not really. Chad suggested that I probably didn't have to use Everywherechat's client so I downloaded a few free IRC clients (Conversation was one, I believe) but I can't figure out the proper IRC address to get connected. (Scott?)
I did try clicking on the buttons that could be seen from the "mini" window and I was able to actually float the window and resize it so that it appeared I could use it but all text was constrained and any messages I typed failed to appear. I finally gave up. Supposedly, Safari has built-in protocol to handle embedded IRC chat but it doesn't appear to be compatible here.

Okay, an update.
I tried it again and it seemed to work although no one else was online to confirm.
In Safari, when you get the tiny window click on the CMDS (commands) button which should be visible.
This will open a window that has Chat Options and Room Options. Click on Chat Options. At the bottom, select "Float" (the float button in the main window doesn't seem to work) and you will get a floating chat room screen that you can re-size. I typed in a few phrases and they appeared to post correctly.

Thanks for the update. I'll try it again soon and see if I can make it work.
