Yes, some of this discussion was pretty exciting, and Facebook is not the same. I read the whole thread as well, and then read a few others (boy, I can have a big mouth when I get rolling...). I wonder if we could lure people people back by posting something on Facebook that there's a great new discussion topic, or even mention on FB that there are some great archived discussions that are still relevant...like this one.

I was amused to read Rik's comments about all that the AEA liaison committee was planning on doing during the local AEA dignitary visit five years ago.  Wonder what ever became of that...certainly nothing has changed.  The Seattle Midsized Theater Alliance was certainly shot down by AEA in a big ol' hurry.  Sort of defeats Chris Comte's comments on how the producers had to be the ones who approach AEA and present what they want.  What good does it do when they won't listen?

I still think the only way to change would be to get the members to actually, uh, organize.

I doubt that anyone will read this, which is a shame.  I have to say, there was a time when the TPS message boards rocked with some great discussions, like this one.  And some six years later, despite a market crash and a regime change, much of the problems are the same.

But one thing I have to say:  The smaller to mid-sized theaters sure came through the recession in better shape than the bigs.  Perhaps it was the smaller theaters' endowments which were in better shape...oh, wait, they never had one!  They actually had to pay their bills with the money they brought in!

Maybe I'll start posting inflammatory statements on the message boards again.  But only if Rik and Chris and Tanja are limited to one post per page.

Seattle Public Theater is looking for a working electronic cash register, preferably from the late 80's early 90's, with a working drawer for its production of The Santaland Diaries.  Any help would be appreciated.  Contact Keith Dahlgren at seattlepublictheater.org (keith@).

Will:

Nobody's chuckling. It's a shame that any theater program gets dropped.  I apologize if I offended you, but frankly, I have heard from many sources that the program is not very good. My daughter is in the Music department, and they put on several musicals a year, and she tells me every year how they get no support from the theater department.  I can't tell you from personal experience like Chris can, but again, my daughter is not my only source.

If they have lots of post-graduate professors, I hope that the rumors are untrue.  My suggestion of running it more like a small non-profit theater company stems from my belief that most Universities don't see the value of a theater program (much like high schools) and it's the first thing that gets cut. Why not look to operate it a little more efficiently and worry less about whether the teachers have PG degrees and more if they can deliver good product and a good education?

Again, my experience at Whitman (many long years ago) was much like that...we ran it like a small theater company. Jack Freimann and Nancy Simon, the department heads, worked long hours (much like a small theater head) and in the off season worked in New York or San Francisco in theaters.

I bemoan the loss of the department at WSU, and wish it could be saved. And my offer is genuine...I know many (not necessarily PG) real life theater workers who would jump at the chance to create a good theater department. I suspect that money is not the only problem, however.

Okay, I really don't have this much time on my hands...really. But I have to post this article from the (get this) Fashion/Style section of the New York Times.

I'm pretty crotchety, I'll admit, but can any of you out there defend this stuff?  Is this what you learn for a post-graduate degree? (just teasing, all you MFAs out there.)

Read the second page description of the exercise.  I wept, I simply wept with emotion.

Thanks, Shana.
