We can only keep this position open until tomorrow - 4/29 - but we still need a costumer these shows. This is primarily a pull/thrift shop production. One dress may need to be built.
I mentioned paid, right?
Additionally, if you are a costumer who doesn't have time right now but would like to be considered for future productions we'd love to meet you. We produce shows every November, March and May. Contact us via email. Thanks!

Awesome. I should have known.
My suspicion meter went way up so I didn't reply but I love the Nigerian Email Scams. I have an old collection of them and, despite or because of the ludicrous spelling and grammatical mistakes, they constitute an interesting body of literature.
Years ago I suggested to my wife that we should collect them and publish sometime but someone beat me to the punch. On a recent trip to New York she bought me an incredibly illustrated collection of these at the MOMA bookstore.
Thanks for posting the text of your email, Scot. I will add it to my vault of correspondence from such luminaries in the email scam world as Mrs. Miriam Abacha (widow of the late Gen. Sani Abacha), Dr. Williams Ubi and the mysterious young Brit, Mr. Tony Fred Williams.

Much of the ire surrounding this issue points to the image as a proper reflection of the events/themes in Oedipus Rex. As an instructor, I'd like to suggest that we (in the theatre) often overestimate the universal awareness of Oedipus in our greater community. I know, this is sad. I am constantly amazed, however, at the number of people I encounter - young and old alike - who haven't the foggiest idea who/what Oedipus is or is about. With my students who are under 25, it is growing increasingly rare that they will have even a cursory exposure to the "Oedipus Complex" via some basic psych class. The good news is, when they are first exposed to the story it can be truly shocking in a way that is often elusive in an E! True Hollywood Story-world. I imagine that the poster is targeted both at an audience that already has some understanding of the play and others that will find the picture compelling enough to investigate. The point of postering (as I understand it) is to get the information out to everyone and hope that a percentage hits the mark. This way, both the uninitiated but accepting and the choir will see it. Of course, in the same establishments, it will also be viewed by the shocked, the hostile, the confused and the enthusiastic-theatre-artist-with-young-child-asking- really-awkward-questions in tow. Therefore, right or wrong, resistance to universally hanging this poster seems to be expected. Though the image is provocative I feel it is appropriate. I'm just not sure I would make the assumption that the public - attempting to determine the plays content/desirability - would necessarily appreciate the artistic connection to the plays themes. (BTW, I don't know if this is true but it strikes me that getting media attention trumps poster advertising in generating revenue. Here's hoping APL's troubles = better exposure. )

TPS Message Boards (requires ID & Password to post) / Discussion / Re: Acquiring Song Rights for Plays
|
on: August 17, 2005, 09:42:20 PM

I wish I had the actual facts about this but I am reasonably sure that you do need the rights if a song covered by BMI/ASCAP is incorporated into a play. Also, technically, I'm pretty sure that if they are paid, performers are supposed to clear songs they cover live. That's what the Commonly Asked Questions FAQ at ASCAP suggests. ( It doesn't mention whether you need to stop and obtain rights when some drunken yahoo demands that you play Freebird.) In schools where I have taught and attended, I've understood that a yearly (or quarterly) blanket licensing payment had to be made to cover use of any song ASCAP protects(songs were not contracted individually.) Music departments and drama departments actually had separate contracts for theatrical performances and choral performances. ASCAP doesn't readily offer up licensing info on their website because there are so many ways to use music (and by extension, to license its use.) I think they expect you to contact them with questions regarding use. http://www.ascap.com/licensing/licensing-form.htmlIf anyone does get (or has) concrete info from them, please pass it on.

It is a terrible power that I wield! Bwah ha ha ha!
Seriously, though: Scott, this seems like a legitimate security problem. When my computer was controlled by Machelle's profile (which hasn't happened in a long time, btw) I clicked into photo editing thinking it couldn't possibly really be her account. Sure enough, I was presented with options to add/remove or rearrange her photos. I only use my cyber-powers for good, not evil, so I left post-haste. It has never happened at home on my Mac so I'm guessing it is a Windows/IE thing? Maybe? It also seems to me that a security patch from MS has been installed on my work computer since the last time this problem arose so perhaps that impacted things. What do you you think?

Okay, an update.
I tried it again and it seemed to work although no one else was online to confirm.
In Safari, when you get the tiny window click on the CMDS (commands) button which should be visible. This will open a window that has Chat Options and Room Options. Click on Chat Options. At the bottom, select "Float" (the float button in the main window doesn't seem to work) and you will get a floating chat room screen that you can re-size. I typed in a few phrases and they appeared to post correctly.

Becky-
Not really. Chad suggested that I probably didn't have to use Everywherechat's client so I downloaded a few free IRC clients (Conversation was one, I believe) but I can't figure out the proper IRC address to get connected. (Scott?)
I did try clicking on the buttons that could be seen from the "mini" window and I was able to actually float the window and resize it so that it appeared I could use it but all text was constrained and any messages I typed failed to appear. I finally gave up. Supposedly, Safari has built-in protocol to handle embedded IRC chat but it doesn't appear to be compatible here.
