On the same night, Le Théâtre Français de Seattle, will present two performances of Molière’s one-act, Les Précieuses ridicules, one in French and one in the new English translation by the Director, Prof. Scott Taylor of Western Washington University in Bellingham.  “Rather than use the common translation of Precious Maidens Ridiculed, I have translated the title as Princess Butterflies because it evokes both the flightiness and beauty of the play’s two main female characters, Magdelon & Cathos.

The director has chosen to present both the English and French versions in two very distinct theatrical styles: the English version will be presented first, and will be set in modern day Hollywood with our main characters played as Hollywood starlets and over-the-top “metrosexuals”; the French version will be performed in a circus-like style in the tradition of Jacques Le Coq.

“ We have assembled a cast of mostly native or near native speakers in the French production, whereas most of the actors in the English language production are American,” said Taylor.

“I hope to make Molière relevant to contemporary audiences so that the universal messages of his works continue to resonate,”  continued Prof. Taylor.

(Eastside Prep School is not sponsoring the event.  TFSeattle is renting the space, which is located across the street from the South Kirkland Park and Ride at the intersection of SR 520 and Lake Washington Blvd/ Bellevue Way in South Kirkland, WA .)

Shows are:
Friday & Saturday (Nov. 16 & 17) at 7:30pm (call at 6:30)

7  TPS Message Boards (requires ID & Password to post) / Employment / Le Théâtre Français de Seattle looking for designers, stage manager(s), and crew on: August 18, 2012, 02:09:31 PM
The newly founded Théâtre Français de Seattle is preparing for its first show, a bilingual production of Molière's "Les Précieuses ridicules," to be performed in November.  We are now looking to build a design team and running crew and are accepting applications for all positions. We are looking for a costume, set, and lighting designers, stage manager, projections designer, board operators, and running crew. The stage manager and board ops will need to know how to follow along with a text written in French.

This is a great opportunity for francophones, francophiles, and students of French to use your French in a "real world" setting. It is also a great opportunity for theatre lovers of all languages to get involved with a new company dedicated to doing high quality theater with a French flair! Smiley

Contact Scott for more info.

I'm a director (with a PhD specializing in French Theatre/Theatre Semiotics, and have significant background in all aspects of theatre: acting, directing, dramaturgy, theory/criticism, and tech theatre). I'm looking for new opportunities to direct in the Seattle area. I'm not interested in producing, just directing. Please contact me if you are looking for some new directing talent for your company, and let's chat.
