TPS Message Boards (requires ID & Password to post) / Discussion / Re: Why reward bad management?

Comparing for-profit to non-profit organizations is very tricky - and actually not really useful. For-profits are all about maximizing stockholder wealth. Amazon.com is really interesting in that stockholder wealth continued to grow even without a profit showing on the books. It's a case-study that business students will be studying for many, many years to come.
Non-profits are all about their boards. Does the board have the ability and the interest to raise money for the organization? (Part of that, of course, comes down to management and the mission and the "product".) If they're willing to raise the money, the organization can pursue its mission. If not, the party is over.

TPS Message Boards (requires ID & Password to post) / Classes & Workshops / SPEAK TO ME: Dialogue for the Playwright and Writer
|
on: August 16, 2005, 02:28:25 PM
|
Seattle Dramatists and Hugo House have joined forces to offer up a very cool playwriting for Fall 2005! To register for the class, email Seattle Dramatists info@seattledramatists.org or call (206) 720-0083 SPEAK TO ME: Dialogue for the Playwright and Writer Taught by Elizabeth Heffron Six Weeks: Thursdays 4-6:00pm at Hugo House October 6th - November 10th Tuition: $190/ $175 for Seattle Dramatists members Class Limit: 15 students Description: Playscripts tell their stories almost solely through dialogue. But, dialogue is not the sole purview of the playwright. Great dialogue is essential for all writers. We recognize great dialogue when we hear it – characters talk as if they’re right in the room with us. But somehow it's more – somehow the writer has infused the words with mystery, resistance, desire, promise, lust. How do they do it? Using a diverse assortment of in-class exercises, award-winning playwright Elizabeth Heffron will share the tools for writing authentic dialogue that reveals plot and character. Class is appropriate for all writers... including the playwright. Elizabeth Heffron bio: Elizabeth Heffron's plays have been produced in the US and Canada, including Seattle, New York, and Vancouver B.C. Her work includes NEW PATAGONIA, MOSES LAKE, APPROACHING PI, and MITZI'S ABORTION, which received a workshop production at ACT Theatre last March. Her short play, BIRDS, is currently a finalist for the Heideman Award at Actors Theatre of Louisville. She’s received a Playwriting Fellowship from Artist Trust/WSAC, is a Principal Playwright at Seattle Dramatists, and teaches playwriting for ACT's Young Playwrights Program.

Elizabeth Heffron just won the ACT Theatre New Play Award and you can have her as a teacher!
Spring 2005 at Seattle Dramatists Elizabeth Heffron's Beginning Playwriting Class.
Tuesdays, April 12th thorugh May 31st (8 weeks) 6:15-9:15pm at Seattle Dramatists Tuition $325, $300 for members of Seattle Dramatists Class limit: 10 To register (or for more information): reply to this email or call Seattle Dramatists at (206) 720-0083
Class Description: This eight-week class explores the process of playwriting from beginning to end. Using a diverse assortment of in-class exercises, most of which are deliberately designed to ‘disarm’ our internal editor, we will discover the essential elements of good plays: believable characters, compelling conflict, and authentic dialogue. Armed with the results of these exercises, the student will then be challenged to complete a one-act play. We will focus on the art of story structure and learn how to weave characters and conflict together in compelling and satisfying ways. Please dress in comfortable clothes as we will begin each class with a series of warm-ups and will frequently come to our writing work from a physical or improvisational exercise.
Teacher bio: Elizabeth Heffron’s plays include NEW PATAGONIA, produced by the Seattle Repertory Theatre, and MITZI’S ABORTION, commissioned by ACT Theatre for the FringeACT Festival of New Plays. She’s created three site-specific musicals for Seattle’s One Reel Productions, including ICICLE TIMES, which featured 250 live performers, plus a horse, a donkey, and two chickens. Her work has been staged in Seattle, Vancouver B.C., New York, St. Louis, and San Francisco. She's the recipient of three Seattle Artist grants from the Seattle Arts Commission, and a Playwriting Fellowship from Artist Trust and the Washington State Arts Commission.

Did this problem from Richard Lorig ever get answered? I had the same problem and I'm running with the same system and browser. Okay, I'm game. I'm not much on chat rooms but I decided to fire it up and... Tiny Box! I'm running it on a Mac on Safari in OSX. (The latest version of everything.) It was impossible to make out a lot of the info because it was bound in the center of the screen by a tiny box. I tried hitting the float button to see if that would free it but nothing happened.
