3  TPS Message Boards (requires ID & Password to post) / Project Promotion / Strawshop opens LENI Friday on: July 09, 2008, 07:56:19 PM
After an 8 month hiatus, Strawberry Theatre Workshop will be opening LENI, part of the Biograph Series. Leni, written by Sarah Greenman, is look into the mind and media of filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl to discover why art can be a dangerous business. Directed by Rhonda J Soikowski and starring Amy Thone and Alexandra Tavares as Leni.

Opening Friday, July 11th, then playing Thursday - Saturday nights at 8:30 through August 9th.
Performed at the Erickson Theatre Off Broadway through July 26th, then at the Broadway Performance Hall July 30 - Aug. 9th.
Advance Tickets are available through Brown Paper Tickets 1-800-838-3006.
Tickets $10 - $25, TPS members $10 at the door with membership card. Thursdays pay-what-you-can at the door.

Riefenstahl's career was shadowed by her history as a documentary filmmaker for Germany's Third Reich in the 1930s. Often called Hitler's propagandist, she disclaimed knowledge of or any responsibility for the Holocaust, saying in 1997 to the New York Times, "I did not know what was going on. I did not know anything about those things."

Leni illuminates the question of artists' responsibility, delving into personal struggles Riefenstahl undoubtedly faced as she continued to insist to her last interview that art and politics are separate and that what she did was in the world of art.

"To call Leni Riefenstahls Triumph of the Will and Olympiad masterpieces is not to gloss over Nazi propaganda with aesthetic lenience. Because they project the complex movements of intelligence and grace and sensuousness, these two films of Riefenstahl transcend the categories of propaganda, or even reportage."
-Susan Sontag, in Fascinating Fascism

"Where is my guilt? I can regret. I can regret that I made the party film, Triumph of the Will in 1934. But I cannot regret that I lived in that time. No anti-Semitic word has ever crossed my lips. I was never anti-Semitic. I did not join the party. So where then is my guilt? You tell me. I have thrown no atomic bombs. I have never betrayed anyone. What am I guilty of?"
-Leni Riefenstahl, in The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl

Strawberry Theatre Workshop and Seattle University Fine Arts present

Bertolt Brecht's LIFE OF GALILEO

"Doubting makes me happy.  Why?"
In 1610, at the peak of the Age of Discovery and the Inquisition, a man raised a telescope towards the heavens and made the explosive claim that the earth was not in fact the center of the universe. Centuries later, Bertolt Brecht expressed his own explosive opposition to Fascism by re-imagining the story of Galileo's conflict between reason and faith. Today, in an new era of fundamentalism and rapid scientific innovation, the artists of Strawberry Theatre Workshop (recent winners of the Stranger's Genius Award for 2007)2 join the students, faculty, and staff of Seattle University to realize Brecht's epic fascinating play of social responsibility and the power of ideas.

6  TPS Message Boards (requires ID & Password to post) / Discussion / Re: S.P. Miskowski brings up old issue for us : Theater Criticism on: July 28, 2007, 11:52:22 AM
Just a few thoughts:

I think a differentiation needs to be made between a "review" and a "critique". These can blend together sometimes, or share qualities, but I think that what we see in our daily and weekly papers are "reviews", where the intent is to communicate to the general public what they might expect to find if they attend the show. The average reader of any of these papers, were they to read the example that SP used on her blog:
“The second act employed formal Suzuki technique, which clashed with the realistic style of the script”, would think "what the @#*$&# does THAT mean?!" A reader in NY might be more educated about dramatic history/tradition/process, but I don't think that most of Seattle has that awareness.

I think that it's interesting that some of the most qualified people to write an "informed" critique of local current work - meaning US - TPS Members - the theater artists - don't. If you look at the "Reviews" board here, what do you find? A lot of reposts of reviews from The Times or The P-I. Maybe that points toward my own separation of critique from review, or maybe we're choosing to post our thoughts elsewhere? personal blogs? Or are we saving our educated critiques for personal conversations? or maybe we think that by not critiquing current work, it's providing an "accepting" community where artists are willing to take risks?

12  TPS Message Boards (requires ID & Password to post) / Project Promotion / PR: RED INK a workshop reading and sing through on: March 30, 2007, 04:35:55 PM
Theater Under Ground & Seattle Foundry present:

Red Ink

by Tim Sanders

a workshop reading and sing through

Sunday, April 1 doors 3:00 p.m.

CHAC Lower Level
1621 12th Ave

All Ages; Tickets: FREE

A reading and sing through of Red Ink, a darkly hilarious new musical with book and lyrics by Tim Sanders and music by Jeremy Delamarter. Enter the accounting firm of Irving and Irving where murder counts more than numbers, and everyone is getting stabbed in the back.

RED INK is a tragic love fable, the quest of a young and painfully shy heroine to avenge the death of her parents. Set against the backdrop of a modern-day corporate accounting office, and amidst sub-plots of near Jacobean-style excess, RED INK is overflowing with “dark, jazzy melodies, sharp humor, and a compelling multiple-murder mystery.” Aptly described as a cross between SWEENEY TODD and THE OFFICE, RED INK, at its heart, is a love story. While the plot twists can be grand and sweeping, in the end the true power of the piece lies in both its frustrated and its consummated relationships. Can a vengeful spirit be redeemed by true love? And who can each of us aspire to be when empowered with the love of another?

This reading marks Theater Under Ground’s first full workshop of the piece, bringing in a stellar cast of actors including Nick Garrison, Tracy Repep, Brandon Simmons, John Lowrie, Jon Lutyens, Maggie Stenson, Caety Sagoian, Craig Doescher, Bob DeDea, Chad Jennings under the musical direction of Mark Rabe and staged by Tom Milewski.

Directed by MJ Sieber, Featuring Gabriel Baron, Kate Czajkowski, David Goldstein, Erik Hill, George Mount, Marty Mukhalian, Michael Patton, and Dusty Warren

Strawberry Theatre Workshop follows up their critically acclaimed production of An Enemy of the People with David Mamet’s, The Water Engine. The play presents a young inventor who's found a way to run an engine on distilled water. Though he’s ridiculed at first, he soon piques the interest of Big Business and is threatened when he refuses to sell his idea. Mamet's simple melodrama is a symbolic portrayal of human innocence defeated by a corrupt and violent society. Or is it simply paranoid fantasy? The audience watches the actors, announcer, and sound effects man present a radio play in the 1930s with unerring authenticity.
