Theatre Puget Sound honors Kurt Beattie and Susan Trapnell of ACT Theatre as the 2004 recipients of the Gregory A. Falls Sustained Achievement Award
( Seattle ) – Theatre Puget Sound (TPS) announced today that Kurt Beattie, Artistic Director and Susan Trapnell, Managing Director both of ACT Theatre are co-recipients of the Gregory A. Falls Sustained Achievement Award. This award honors individuals who have devoted time, energy and talent to Seattle ’s theatre community, and who have had an influence on theatre locally and beyond. In particular, this award honors people who have had a widespread positive effect on the community.
This will be the seventh annual Gregory Falls Sustained Achievement Award. It was initiated in 1997 through a generous donation by Jean Falls to honor the memory of Seattle theatre visionary Gregory Falls. TPS will honor Beattie and Trapnell at a gala luncheon on Monday, October 25, from 11:30am – 1:15pm in the Alki Northwest Room at Seattle Center . The public is invited to attend. Kurt Beattie joined ACT Theatre in 2001 as Associate Artistic Director and was appointed Artistic Director in April of 2003. In 2004 he directed ACT’s productions of Black Coffee by Agatha Christie, Alki by Eric Overmyer, and he will direct this year's 29th annual production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. In 2003 his directing credits at ACT included, A Moon for the Misbegotten, Fuddy Meers and Fully Committed. He also directed Via Dolorosa during ACT's 2000 Bullitt season. In addition in Seattle he directed Things Being What They Are and Art at the Seattle Repertory Theatre and productions at The Empty Space, Intiman, and the University of Washington. He is also known for his directing work with the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and at Alley Theatre in Houston. As an actor he has appeared in leading and major roles at ACT (most recently as Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol), the Seattle Rep, Intiman, and The Empty Space, as well as many regional theatres throughout the country. Last winter Kurt played the title role in Seattle Shakespeare Company's production of King Lear. Also a playwright, he is currently working on a commission for the Seattle Children's Theatre.
Susan Trapnell, was appointed Managing Director of ACT Theatre, for the second time, in April of 2003. She served in the same position from 1982-2000. In the intervening 3 years, Susan spent two years as Executive Director of the Seattle Arts Commission (now the Mayor's Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs) and Managing Director of the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. She is currently on the Board of Town Hall, the Executive Alliance, and Theatre Communications Group and on the advisory board of Arts Space and UMO. She has served as President of the Washington State Arts Alliance and as Vice Chair of the King County Arts Commission.
