The Shifting Sands of Demand: Trends in Arts Participation and Consumer Behaviors
The ways that Americans fit arts activities into their lives has changed dramatically over the past 10 to 15 years. The sorts of experiences they demand, their cultural tastes, how they decide what to do, and their expectations for fulfillment are moving targets. Trends in the macro environment affect all types of cultural organizations. Yet, understanding these trends - and figuring out how to respond - remains a serious planning challenge for most arts groups. Alan Brown will present an overview of key trends in consumer behaviors related to arts attendance, drawing on a range of public and proprietary research conducted over the past ten years. The session will cover the changing cultural climate, changing consumer behaviors, and changing patterns of arts participation.
Throughout, participants will be invited to reflect on what these trends mean for their organizations.
