Blood Water Paint is an audaciously imaginative and unflinching retelling of the true story of Artemisia Gentileschi, an Italian Baroque painter now considered one of the most accomplished of her generation. Gentileschi’s story unfolds through interactions with the women featured in her own most famous paintings and the process of teaching her daughter to paint, and culminates in her fierce battle to rise above the most devastating event in her life and fight for justice despite horrific consequences. This production will include silk aerial work. After this plays' original production in 2015 the author turned it into a novel.

This play will the the 3rd Collaboration between writer Joy McCullough and Director Amy Poisson.
This play World Premiered in Seattle in 2015 produced by Live Girls! at Theatre Off Jackson.

This play contains Sexual assault. It may not be appropriate subject matter for everyone. Please take this into account. Two of the characters need to have prior experience on Aerial silks.

 

Character Breakdown / Project Needs
Macha Theatre Work's produces plays that feature strong female characters. We encourage all actors to audition.

Judith and Susanna will be silk aerialists. This play deals with sexual assault. The main character is assaulted by another character during the play. Please take this information into account before you audition.

ARTEMISIA, female, a 17th century Italian painter, plays ages 17 & 35
This character paints during the show, goes back and forth in time -changes age on stage, simply and flawlessly. She is a painter first, a survivor, a mother, a daughter. She is fierce, impulsive and volatile.

PRUDENZIA, Age 10 (played by adult female), Artemisia’s daughter; Also plays ABRA, Judith’s servant ; Also plays REBECCA, Susanna’s sister. The actor playing this character must be versatile and able to switch characters on stage with the addition of a scarf, or basket. The slide back and forth as the everywoman in Artemisia’s life.

SUSANNA, Can be played by age 19-30 female, Apocryphal woman of great virtue, famously painted by Artemisia, this character comes to life in Artemisia’s fantasy. The actor playing this character will need to be able to combine acting with Aerial silk work

JUDITH, Apocryphal savior of her people, slayer of Holofernes, a beautiful widow. Can be played by age 19-40 female, famously painted by Artemisia, this character comes to life in Artemisia’s fantasy. The actor playing this character will need to be able to combine acting with Aerial silk work.

ORAZIO, ALREADY CAST; Age 40 - 65 male; 17th century Italian painter, Artemisia’s father.
Also plays: JUDGE – Judge who presided at Artemisia’s trial and DANIEL – Old Testament ruler and ELDER 1 – an advisor to Daniel

AGOSTINO, Age 33, male; 17th century Italian painter, Artemisia’s mentor and rapist.
Also plays: HOLOFERNES – Captain of the Assyrian army and ELDER 2 – an advisor to Daniel
and GUARD – at Susanna’s stoning.

June 1st starting at 12pm

Callbacks or second audition/interview?
June 2nd (for aerialists &) 4th & 5th

Audition Requirements:
Prepare 2 short pieces. Modern -1 dramatic, 1 comedic. Those auditioning for Susannah and Judith will also have Aerial Silk Auditions. BRING YOUR HEADSHOT & RESUME WITH YOU. It can be a black and white print out but we need a photo of you.

Scripts will be sent out for callbacks

Monetary compensation:
All Actors receive an Honorarium of at least $200.
