Character Breakdown / Project Needs
PHILLIP SCARBOROUGH (OLIVER THORNDEN) - THE FAWN
A brash young man in his twenties, a schooled innocent of justice, who knows right from wrong, but slowly learns that justice doesn’t always work that way.

SIMON OAK - THE BLACK OAK
A Black Man in his late thirties, early forties, a man of the world, a master fencer, feared pirate, who takes Phillip under his wing and teaches him the meaning of the sword and true justice.

GILBERT HUNT
The Basil Rathbone in this play, a man in his forties, smooth, dangerous, whose ambitions are cloaked in courtesy, a man who spills another man’s blood without soiling a handkerchief.

CATHERINE CARRELL
The combination Olivia De Haviland / Kate Hepburn / Liz Taylor woman in her twenties, a woman of heart and fire, whose tongue is as sharp as her sword, who finds truth, love and justice can be the key to an interesting man.

EDMUND SCARBOROUGH
The false Earl of Claremont, bastard half brother of Phillip, who takes advantage of any opportunity tossed his way, who would not raise a hand for or against you - unless it was in his own best interests.

UNA
Catherine’s maid, in memory of and honor to Una O’Conner. She can be short or tall, fat or thin, beautiful or not. What is the key is her fluttering devotion to Catherine, her symbolism of confidant and nurse.

ADAM
Our mystery man, teacher, philosopher, knower of all secrets in the Castle of Claremont. When he takes hand in the action, everyone will be off guard. A nod to the Count.

STUDENTS, GUARDS, HENCHMEN, LADIES IN WAITING,
THE JUSTICES, MEMBERS OF THE COURT OF CLAREMONT.
Each will have their moments, but the number should be kept within realistic bounds. Multiple roles are not out of the question. Each scene needs a number of extras to fill out the image on stage.
