The Devil and Sarah Blackwater
Written by Anthea Carns. Music and Lyrics by Lauren Freman
Directed by Madison Jade Jones and Sam Ro.

Annex Theatre Mainstage
Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays, January 31-March 2nd, at 7:30pm and two Monday night performances (February 11th and 18th at 7:30pm)

Singer-songwriter Sarah Blackwater's tour is rudely interrupted when the Devil comes calling about a debt: Sarah's partner, Sam Bell, sold their soul seven years ago, and the Devil has come to collect. Sarah isn't about to let Sam go without a fight -- but on her way through the underworld, she's faced with the ghost of her girlfriend Kelly, talking animals, magic, music, and hard choices. Inspired by tales from American folklore to Scottish ballads to Jim Henson and Neil Gaiman, The Devil and Sarah Blackwater incorporates live music and movement to tell a story of love, loss, grief, and growth.

Annex Theatre is actively and intentionally committed to diverse and inclusive casting and volunteer hiring for all productions. Inclusive casting is understood as being open to casting roles with artists in roles where ethnicity, gender, age, or ability is not prescribed and who may not reflect the original description of a role in terms of age, ability, ethno-cultural identity, gender, or sexual identity.

Schedule: Rehearsals will begin December 3rd, and will be mostly weeknights, with some weekend rehearsals.

Character Breakdown / Project Needs
Casting Breakdown:
*A note regarding the character breakdowns below: many characters we encounter in current scripts are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns, and you may see that in the following descriptions. However limiting these descriptions may seem, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character, but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Please reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns. (language borrowed from Actor’s Theatre of Louisville Casting Release)
*The role of Sarah Blackwater will be played by composer Lauren Freman

Sam Bell: 25-35 years old. Sarah’s partner, sometime booker/manager, sometime backup singer. Pretty chill, supportive to death (literally). Singing role.
The Devil: Eternal. Dapper. Acquisitive. Neither/both male and female. Singing role.
The River: The boundary between the first crossroad and the road to Hell. Insistent and aloof, but not cruel.
The Wolf: A lone wolf that used to be a person. Defensive and lost. Singing role.
The Crows: Three carrion birds. They might have been people before, but they might have always just been asshole birds. Singing roles.
Kelly McClendon: 20-34 years old. A literature/folklore major who was killed by a drunk driver. Intellectual, impatient, lonely. Female. Singing role.
The Rose: A rose, which is a rarity.
