This is a one shot reading of a new play, THE LAST CRANKIE. Unfortunately, one of our actors had to withdraw from this project, and so I am looking for a replacement.
THE LAST CRANKIE is an upbeat, fun and funny romp, set in a dystopian future. It examines whether “old-growth” cultural values [now replaced with alternative norms] can be protected and preserved for future generations.
In an isolated wood, three Girl Scouts, exploring the “Truth” behind Crankie lore and its attendant rumors in order to earn a high ranking scouting badge, encounter an abandoned Crankie along with its story-scroll.” Through experiencing the tale this scroll tells, their lives and how they think of themselves are changed forever.
The story told by the Crankie is as follows: Without NANA’s knowledge, her daughter (CISSY), in order to benefit her child (MOLLY), has contracted to sell NANA’s collection of Great Books for bounty money. The buyer is the corrupt “Agency” which controls and rules their lives.
Realizing the sale is imminent, NANA has “stolen back” her collection.
While seeking a safe place for it, she meets GABRIELLA, a “fallen” Guardian Angel, who agrees to help out… if NANA helps GABRIELLA get back her wings.
What follows details NANA’s pursuit of her goal (along with the help of her family and the family’s dog), and the Agency’s attempt to thwart their efforts at any cost.
The story moves from Corruption and Loss, through Redemption to Hope and Honor.
Character Breakdown / Project Needs
GIRL SCOUT #2/ BETTY DAVIS (the family dog).
Actor to play both roles (see below). Some simple movement (improv) may be required akong with a basic ability to handle simple folksinging.
GIRL SCOUT #2 is a female scout (who is intentionally doubled with BETTY DAVIS [the dog].) Any race or ethnicity. The perennial “sidekick.” As with the other Scouts, her singing voice is untrained, yet compelling.
BETTY DAVIS is the family in the Crankie story's female dog (played by an actor). A cross between a bulldog and a pointer, she has an attractive demeanor while still being touch as nails and determined.
