“Float” is a contemporary, two-act play by Patricia Kane. It centers on five women crafting a float for the Christmas parade in a small town in Illinois. Exploring themes of nascent lesbian love, religion and intergenerational friendship, “Float” helps us discover what it means to trust yourself, the women in your chosen family and those in your larger community.

Rehearsals will be primarily weekday nights (Mon., Wed. and Thurs.), as well as Sundays. We will be off over Thanksgiving weekend. Performances are 12/1 and 12/15 at 6 p.m. and 12/2 and 12/16 at 2 p.m. at The Pocket Theater. The week after Thanksgiving (11/26-11/29) we’ll have Tech and Dress rehearsals Mon.-Thurs. Please bring your calendar and a list of any conflicts to auditions so you can give them to us.

Character Breakdown / Project Needs
5 women, ages 30-60+. (Must be able to play at least 30s.)

Luce Ellers-- Early 30s. A florist. Venturing into a (lesbian) relationship for the first time in many years (with Marty). Doodee is like a mother to her.

Marty Luedtke-- Early 40s. Seminary student, new to town, a recovering alcoholic. Divorced from a previous (straight) marriage and mother of two college girls. Philosophical.

Charlene “Shar” Bennett-- 40s. A real estate agent. Also straight-divorced. Has one daughter in high school. This character “changes clothes” onstage during a scene, so must be played by someone comfortable with appearing briefly in underclothes (may be fairly covered up, like with camisole and tights, if needed).

Doodee Helverson-- 40s/50s. Hostess for the float building activities. Married to her husband “Hoot” since high school, where she was a cheerleader. Attends the same church as Luce.

Arletta Nitz-- 50s+. Widowed, mother of one grown son. A grandmother. Another former cheerleader. Thinks she can sing.
