Book-It Repertory Theatre’s Arts and Education Program will be holding General Auditions for their 2018-2019 Touring Season on July 30th and 31st.

Book-It’s Arts and Education Program presents three original adaptations of books for children, young adults and adults that tours schools, libraries and community venues across the state of Washington.

The first two productions are expected to have between 35-50 touring performances, while The Odyssey is expected to have between 45-60 productions; the majority of performances are scheduled on weekdays, during daytime school hours (8am-4pm). Actors are paid $75 per performance, an hourly wage for rehearsals and training, 40-60 hours total. Per Diem and Accommodations will be provided when applicable for longer trips.

Each production will have a cast of three actors, playing a myriad of roles. The cast will be supported by a stage manager/in-cast coordinator in the field. Unlike previous years, there is no teaching artist component for actors for this tour season.

2018/19 Touring Season

FALL: The Upside Down Boy or El Niño de Cabeza by Juan Felipe Herrera
Directed by Sophie Franco
This show is performed in English and Spanish.
When Juan and his family move to a big city, his whole world feels upside down. He doesn’t speak English, he doesn’t understand the rules to recess, and whenever he tries to speak, his tongue feels like heavy rocks. But with the help of music, poetry, and an encouraging teacher, Juan finds his voice and footing in this upside down world that he soon considers his home.
Rehearsals: August 20 – September 26, 2018
Preview: September 27, 2018
Touring: October 1 – December 31, 2018*

WINTER: New Shows by Susan Lynn Meyer
Directed by Lamar Legend
Ella Mae is in need of some new shoes, but when she and her mother arrive at Mr. Johnson’s shoe store, her happiness quickly turns to dejection. She is forced to wait and unable to even try a pair on because of her skin color. Determined to fight back, Ella Mae and her friend work to collect and restore old shoes. The girls have their very own shoe sale, giving the other African American members of their community a place where they can be treated fairly and “try on all the shoes they want.”

SPRING: The Odyssey
Directed by Annie DiMartino
Journey with Odysseus as he and his crew battle a cyclops, survive the magic potion of the goddess, Circe, and navigate their way through the Siren's songs! After being gone from Ithaca for the last 20 years, will Odysseus be welcomed or cursed to live life on the open seas? Adapted from Homer's Epic Poem, The Odyssey: an exploration though Myth, Magic and Monsters captures perfectly through mask and Greek tradition the importance of team work, problem solving and the power of ingenuity and perseverance.
Rehearsals: January 28 – February 26, 2019
Preview: February 27, 2019
Touring: March 1 - June 30, 2019*
*includes weeklong overnight tour from June 24th – 28th
Artists experienced and/or interested in mask work and singing are encouraged to audition.

Auditions will be held for all three touring shows at Theatre Puget Sound on the following dates:
Monday, July 30th 1:00p – 4:00p
Tuesday, July 31st 10:00a – 1:00p

You’ll then receive a confirmation email with your assigned 4-minute time slot and further details about the auditions.

Audition Requirements:
Please prepare a 1-2 minute passage from a young adult or classic novel that includes both dialogue and narrative. Performed poetry is also acceptable for this audition. Please note, you may also be asked for an additional monologue and/or song during your audition slot.

Monetary compensation:
