NON-UNION Fellowship Showcase

The Good Woman of Setzuan, written by Bertolt Brecht and translated by Eric Bentley, is a socially conscious parable about a poor young woman, Shen Te, who puts up three gods for the night and in turn wins their title of a good human being. When she argues that their title is impossible to maintain without money, the gods decide to bestow upon her a small fortune. With the best of intentions she becomes an entrepreneur, only to be taken advantage of by her family, neighbor, and lover alike. As the money begins to dwindle away, she is forced to create an alter ego, Shui Ta, a cunning and unyielding businessman, that allows her to protect her shop, her heart, and ultimately, her child. A story about the hypocrisy in both ourselves and our society, Brecht poses the questions, what is our responsibility to our neighbors? And is this the kind of world we want to leave our children?

The play will be a cut of the original play to fit a cast of five. Beginning as Wong, the First God, the Second God, the Third God, and Shen Te, these five key storytellers will then go on to create the entire world. With bodies, lights and sounds we will create this world almost entirely from nothing. Before our eyes, storytellers will shift characters, and the stage will slip in and out of different locations.
