PARLEY is casting the world premiere workshop of About Marilyn, a new play by associate playwright Julieta Vitullo and directed by Rebecca Tourino Collinsworth.
ABOUT THE PROCESS:
Our process is unconventional; it is designed with the needs of new work in mind. We rehearse our plays twice a week for four consecutive weeks in order to allow the playwright ample time to observe the process, absorb the actors' discoveries and challenges, and use that information to inform and inspire a revision process. In the final week, we perform and celebrate.
Parley is a weekly playwrights' group as well as a producing entity. The term "parley" derives from the French verb "parler": to speak. Historically, a parley was a meeting between adversaries in order to negotiate an end to battle. To signal a willingness to talk peaceably, armies would run up a white flag. Writing is a solitary act. It's easy for playwrights who feel isolated to become defensive. Our group seeks to cure that condition. By committing to a process of reading, discussing, and producing one another's work, we surrender the lone struggle and move creatively forward together.
Character Breakdown / Project Needs
TONY ROMANO: Italian American male. Oldest brother, forty years old. Derisive, sarcastic and foulmouthed. He loses his temper easily but he can also be lighthearted and joke around. He was born in Italy during WWII and was brought to the U.S. at the age of two, when the family emigrated.
GEORGE ROMANO: Italian American male. Middle brother, three years younger than TONY. He was born in New Jersey. Serious and apathetic. He hardly ever smiles. He has an “I’ve been there done that” kind of attitude that doesn’t match his actual life experience but, when he cares about something, he does so deeply.
MARILYN ROMANO: Italian American female. Youngest sister, almost twenty years old, in a wheel chair. She was born in New Jersey. She is good spirited and proper, polite and well-mannered.
