Staged reading of On Cabin Creek, a play set in 1939 in the coalfields of West Virginia; with live bluegrass music.

Date of Performance: Friday, May 12, 2017 at 7 p.m.

Presented by Seattle Playwrights Salon

There will be a rehearsal in mid-April, and one in early May.


Other details:
The play is filled with traditional Appalachian music, both white and black. Actors who can sing short selections from the music are preferred. HARLAN plays the fiddle.


Character Breakdown / Project Needs
**Some audition roles are NOW CLOSED and have been cast: Eleanor, The Reverend Hinckley, Sophie, Catherine, and Mrs. Ellis/Mrs. Roosevelt**

All actors are white, except for Charlie Corey, who is black. All actors sing a few lines of traditional Appalachian music, both black and white, throughout the play. HARLAN plays the fiddle.

ELEANOR: Age 20. High school graduate and assistant to the postmaster at the Cabin Creek station. Writes “dispatches from the coalfields of Cabin Creek” about unsafe mine conditions; they are published in a New York City newspaper. --CAST

CATHERINE: Age 15, high school sophomore. Also plays YOUNG SOPHIE. --CAST

HARLAN: Age 19. Has one more week of high school before he graduates with a diploma. Also plays YOUNG SAMUEL.

SOPHIE: 40s. Mother of ELEANOR, CATHERINE, and HARLAN. SAMUEL’S wife. Homemaker. --CAST

SAMUEL: 40s. Father of ELEANOR, CATHERINE, and HARLAN. SOPHIE’S husband. Coalminer.

REVEREND HINCKLEY: 50s. Cabin Creek’s Methodist minister. Also plays MR. STEWART. --CAST

CHARLIE COREY: Age 20. Full-time coalminer and part-time cobbler’s apprentice.

JAMES ELLIS: 30s. Cabin Creek high school science teacher; married to MAVIS ELLIS. Also plays YOUNG SOPHIE’S father, CLARENCE VAIL.

MAVIS ELLIS / MRS. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT: 30s. Wife of James. Homemaker. --CAST
