THE BLACK EYE SOCIETY: A CYCLE is an evening of short plays to be presented at the Seattle Fringe Festival from March 23-April 1. Rehearsals officially begin Monday, February 27th, but the rehearsal process will include a developmental “workshop” and private reading on January 29th. All the pieces are written by Tré Calhoun and directed by Michael F. Myers.

The plays in the cycle explore the perils of love, painting our connections with others in complex, often dark, tones. What rules govern our relationships and interactions? Why do we tend to hurt one another? And how can we overcome these obstacles to find redemption?

We’re looking for people who have a strong interest in developing new work, since we plan to call on every team member’s input and experience to help shape this promising new work. Some performers will double two roles, acting in two of the four pieces. Each actor will be compensated with a $175 stipend.

About the plays in the cycle:
To distract his friend Roman from a failed engagement, Josh dreams up a seemingly innocent game; however, Roman refuses to be confined by the rules.

After Ben murders his wife, he and his mistress, Tori, plot their next move. But the dynamic of power can shift on a dime when things are not as they seem.

Haunted by a tragic accident, Ashton’s old wounds are torn open when his long lost “aunt” Jasmyn makes contact with him. Together, however, the unlikely pair rediscover the meaning of family and chart a path to healing in the wake of tragedy.

In this highly stylized piece, lovers Maggie and Marco fight for control over the terms of their relationship. But when deceit, insult, and jealousy are valid means to this end, they risk corrupting the relationship they're fighting for.

Rehearsal Schedule:
Light rehearsal and a private, “in-house” reading from January 23-29.
Full rehearsals begin February 27th: Monday-Thursday evenings + Sunday afternoons. Timings somewhat flexible – actors will not be called for all rehearsals.
Four performances from March 23-April 1.

Interested actors should email Michael Myers for an audition appointment. Audition information and sides can be viewed at the provided link.

Character Breakdown / Project Needs
Josh (M/20-30/ nonspecific race): Follows the rules and looks out for his best friend, Roman.
Roman (M/20-30): Recklessly devoted to a failed romance, and any rules are in his way.
Ben (M/30-40/white): Melanie’s boyfriend. Entitled and prone to overreaction. He loves the feeling of power but panics under pressure. Light stage combat necessary.
Tori (W/20s/nonspecific race): Ben’s assistant and mistress. Sharp-witted and playful. Enamored of Ben but could outsmart him in a second. Light stage combat necessary.
Melanie (W/30-40/nonspecific race/minor role): Ben’s girlfriend. We think she’s dead until she saves Tori and herself. Light stage combat necessary.
Ashton (M/21/African-American): An idealistic college student studying to become a social activist, but the trauma of his parents’ recent deaths could derail his dream.
Jasmyn (W/35-45/African-American): Grew up an orphan and eventually supported herself and her best friend by stripping. Now she works (in finance), but never had the chance to learn how familial relationships work.
Maggie (W/25-35/race nonspecific): Her cunning tends to give her the upper hand against Marco, but she’s even more insecure about potentially losing him. She loves him, in her way.
Marco (M/25-35/race nonspecific): Physically threatening when he needs to be, but struggles with articulating his feelings. He loves her, in his way.
