Directed by Rob Bergquist
Text adapted from Moliere translated by Charles Heron Wall
Using traditional Commedia del Arte techniques, this process will mold this classic comedy through improvisation, clowning techniques and mask work into a fully improvised final production. Through building a strong collaborative team, each performer will be expected to create a unique show in each performance, while sticking to an outline derived from the Heron Wall script. The process will include at least 8 intensive physical rehearsals, a series of improvisational rehearsals and finally full improvised run throughs.
Rehearsals will begin in late August and take place at the Ballard Underground on NW Market Street from 6:30 - 10 weeknights and also on the weekends. Rehearsals will start with physical workshops 2 or 3 times a week and will pick up in frequency in September. Performances will begin October 26th, 2013 and run a total of 3 weeks, with two Thursday performances and one Monday performance as well as a Sunday matinee, also at The Ballard Underground.
Directed by Beth Raas
Written by William Shakespeare
In this Hamlet, we will be swapping the genders of the characters to experiment with how our perceptions of the play change when women play traditionally male roles, and vice versa. All other aspects of this production will be traditional (ie, Shakesperian costumes, fighting with swords not guns, the play takes place in the late 1500s, etc). Additionally, the pronouns will be swapped (Claudius is the Queen, Gertrude is the king, Hamlet is referred to as "she") - it will not be a drag show nor will the point be humorous effect; we will take the text, plot and characters seriously and with their original intent (just not their original gender). If you are a purest, this may not be the production for you; however, if this idea is exciting to you and you're ready to experiment with this storied classic, please do audition. All roles are open.
Rehearsals will begin in late October, and take place primarily at The Ballard Underground on NW Market Street from 7 - 10 weeknights and during the day on weekends. Rehearsals will start at 3 times per week and increase as we get closer to tech. The actress playing Hamlet may be asked to begin rehearsal as early as August due to the demands of the role. Hamlet will perform the final 3 weekends of January with two Thursday performances and one Monday performance as well as a Sunday matinee, also at The Ballard Underground.
