Project Description:
Red Curtain Productions announces auditions for their first play of the 2012-13 seaon, Neil Simon's "The Sunshine Boys." The show will perform Sept 21-Oct 7, 2012 at the Historic Everett Theatre.
"Sunshine Boys" tells the story of a fictional vaudeville duo, Al Lewis & Willie Clark, who achieved great success as comedic pioneers on stage and early television. A decade ago, they had a falling out and vowed never to speak again. Now Willie's nephew is a talent agent and has gotten CBS to request them for a "History of Comedy" retrospective. The grudging reunion brings the two back together, along with a flood of memories, miseries and laughs. |

Character Breakdown / Project Needs Willie Clark: (m, 65-80) One half of the great vaudeville comedy team, “Lewis & Clark.” Willie is a bitter, sarcastic old man but he hasn’t lost his comedic knack. He’s always dead-on with punchlines and timing. He’s very wrapped up in his own life, and doesn’t show any signs of sentimentality or empathy, yet there’s something wholly endearing about him.
Ben Silverman: (m, 30-45) Willie’s nephew and agent. Ben cares very much for his uncle and really looks up to him. He tries to find work for Willie, but Willie’s age and personality keep sending up roadblocks. A practical, hard-working family man, Ben really didn’t inherit any of his uncle’s sense of comedy.
Al Lewis: (m, 65-80) The other half of “Lewis & Clark.” Al is the more timid straight man to Willie’s explosive temperament, yet he can dish it out on an equal level. Where Willie denies the limitations of aging, Al has learned to enjoy his golden years. That being said, it’s obvious he misses his old partner and the good times they shared.
TV Director: (m, any age, voice only) Matter-of-fact and all-business. He doesn’t have time for actors’ temper tantrums. He’s all about keeping on-schedule and on-budget.
Eddie: (m, 20-30) A young Production Assistant. Everything rolls down onto Eddie’s shoulders, and he’s carrying a great weight trying to get this production ready for broadcast.
Announcer: (m, any age, voice only) Should embody the cool, smooth tone of the 80’s daytime TV Announcer.
Patient: (m, 30-50) This is an actor playing the role of a patient for the TV broadcast. He can be a bit overacted and perhaps come across as a hypochondriac.
Sexy Nurse: (f, 20-45) Also a character for the TV show. This character’s purpose is to be the object of lewd sexual jokes. She should be blonde and curvy (think Cathy Moriarty in “Soapdish”).
Registered Nurse: (f, 35-55) A mature woman, preferably African-American. She is savvy and practical, but also thoroughly enjoys her time caring for Willie. She seems to be the only person who breaks through his crusty exterior.
